A University of Pennsylvania climate scientist whose work helped make the case that humans are causing climate change has been awarded just $1 in compensatory damages in a lawsuit against two conservative writers.
Michael Mann sued Rand Simberg and Mark Steyn for defamation over statements they made about his work over a decade ago, NPR reports.
In one post, Steyn called Mann a "fraudulent" climate scientist who had "molested and tortured" data.
In another, Simberg called Mann a "Sandusky of climate science," a reference to Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State football coach who was convicted of child sex abuse.
A jury awarded Mann $1,000 in punitive damages and $1 million in punitive damages.
"I hope this verdict sends a message that falsely attacking climate scientists is not protected speech," Mann said in a statement.
